Thornton passed on Jan. 28, 2023, according to his official obituary.
Prior to joining the Steelers the 5'11", 230 lb running back was on the team at Northwestern State University in Louisiana.
He was drafted by Pittsburgh in 1977 and was on the team when it went to the Super Bowl in 1979 and 1980. He left the team in 1982 but returned to pro football in 1984, playing one season with the Oklahoma Outlaws, before retiring.
Over his six-year career, he rushed 1,500 yards and made 24 combined touchdowns.
His cause and manner of death have not been released at the time of publishing.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and extended family.
His wake will be held at Winnfield Funeral home on 3701 Hollywood Avenue Shreveport, LA 71103 from 6 to 8 p.m. and his funeral will be held at the same location the follow morning at 11 a.m. , his daughter Sydney told Daily Voice.
